Bat babies, kind of cute right! |
For many years now I have been harassed by quite an amount of big and small mosquitoes and flies when I have the doors and windows at my house open in the summertime. But finally I think I have found the perfect solution.
I talked to the janitor of my workplace and he told me he lived very near the Nidelven river, and that river is quite big. But even though he lives near the river he doesn't have any problems with mosquitoes and flies in the summertime. And the reason is quite simple, there are huge amount of bats in the area.
They eat a lot of bugs... |
So when I did a little checking on the net, I found that they eat from a few hundreds and up to several thousands of mosquitoes, flies and other small flying insects each night. In other words, they keep their area more or less clean from the little bloodsucking buggers we all hate.
How to get bats in your area. Well, it's quite simple actually. You just have to make bat houses/boxes (birdcage) and put them up around in your area. And then... If you get bats to live there they will make the summer nights pleasant instead of more or less bloody!!!
Ant that is because each bat is typically able to consume one third of its body weight in insects each night, and several hundred insects in a few hours. This means that a group of one thousand bats could eat four tons of insects each year. If bats were to become extinct, the insect population is calculated to reach an alarmingly high number
And they really are kind of small and vulnerable creatures |

:)
This website was really helpful to me because I am raising my own little flying fox bat. I give it milk and mushed fruit, and just today it started flying. In fact i had to hunt all over my basement to find him! :) After I got him however, I decided it was time to get him a new bigger more stable housing system. Someplace where I could still reach him but he would feel as wild as he wanted. This website gave me the simplest and most efficient bat box to make and enter in 4h for my woodworking project. :) It's people like you that help save orphaned animals every DAY. Thank you SO much for your work and your care. You are very much appreciated to every friend of wildlife like me. We need more people like you. :)
